If you’ve just purchased a VPS or you’re still thinking about it, you might be asking yourself – how do I log in once I’ve got it? Whether you’re a first time VPS user, or a seasoned pro, it’s always good to stay up-to-date in case anything’s changed since your last purchase.

Speaking of change, you may have heard we’ve got a brand new range of VPS, available to buy right now. This range comes with all the power, performance and speed you could possibly need to host your latest project, idea or business (plus free Plesk Web Host Edition is always a nice bonus!).

In this blog we’ll take a look at how to log into your new VPS from your Control Panel for both Windows and Linux users. And if you’ve done this before, consider this blog a handy refresher.

Windows

So, you’ve just bought your chosen Windows VPS package, kitted out with all the features you need to run smoothly and without lag. What’s next? We’ve broken the process down into a few simple steps.

  1. Head over to your dashboard in the Control Panel.
  2. One the left you’ll see a list of possible products. Click ‘Virtual Private Servers’.
  3. From here, select the VPS you’ve just bought. You’ll be taken over to the Cloud Panel. This is an individual control panel for each VPS you have, which you’ll notice for any of our new VPS that you have.

The most common method for logging in to your Windows VPS is using RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol), which is preinstalled on any Windows desktop. We’ll also cover another method if this isn’t available.

4.   Copy the IP address that’s listed in your Cloud Panel, click on RDP and paste the IP address in the popup window. You’ll be given the option to add the computer name, but this isn’t necessary.

5.   After you click ‘Connect’, another popup will appear, prompting you to input your Windows server credentials. These can be found in your Cloud Panel under the ‘Login Data’ section.       

6.   Once you hit ‘Ok’, you’re logged in.

Windows – method 2

If you can’t log in using RDP, due to connectivity issues or some other reason, all isn’t lost! There’s a second way you can access your VPS. This method can also be used for Linux.

  1. Follow steps 1-3 from the first method.
  2. Select the VPS, click ‘Actions’, then open KVN/Remote Console. This is a portal to the server itself through the Cloud Panel. It’s a virtual monitor, replicating what you would see as if you were standing in front of the physical server with a PC.
  3. You’ll be presented with the Windows login screen, which you can log into using your Windows Server credentials.

Linux

As with Windows, there are multiple options for logging into your Linux VPS, three of which we’ll cover here. 

  1. Follow the same steps 1-3 as with Windows, except this time you’ll be selecting the Linux VPS you’ve just purchased. The Cloud Panel will look the same regardless of which OS you use.
  2. Copy the IP address displayed in the Cloud Panel and open PuTTY. This is one of the most common SSH clients used for Linux.
  3. Paste in the IP address and click ‘Ok’. You’re now connected to your VPS, but not logged in.
  4. A popup will appear asking for your login details. Once these have been entered, you’re logged in.

Linux – method 2

This second method uses Windows Powershell, another SSH used for Linux. The SSH used is completely up to you and down to personal preference.

  1. Follow the same steps 1-3 as with Windows, except this time you’ll be selecting the Linux VPS you’ve just purchased.
  2. Copy the IP address, then click to open Windows Powershell.
  3. You’ll then need to type in ‘SSH’ followed by the username, @, and the IP address. Then press ‘ctrl+v’, type ‘yes’ to agree to trust the PC, and you’re logged in.
