If you’re a fan of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, you’ve probably been waiting for GTA 6 ever since you chose Deathwish. Well, it looks like the wait might finally be coming to an end, and sooner than you think. Ever since the so-called “official announcement” (heavy emphasis on the air quotes), there have been a bunch of leaks and rumours floating around the internet. But there still hasn’t been a single trailer or image from the real game.
Let’s take a look at (pretty much) everything we know so far…
The official announcement
At the beginning of 2022, Rockstar Games gave us the “announcement” for GTA VI at the end of a community update article. There hasn’t been much official news since then, so only time will tell as to how far along the game actually is. But, it's worth remembering it wouldn’t be the first time Rockstar Games has trolled us.
The illegal GTA 6 leak
In the same year, Rockstar Games Tweeted that an "unauthorised third-party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information" from its systems, including "early development footage" for the next game. In other words, GTA 6.
The hack didn’t seem to have a long-term impact on its development, but we did get a glimpse into what could be the unfinished game.
GTA 6 characters
The protagonists
One thing we’re all looking forward to is the official reveal of the playable characters, already leaked by Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier. Influenced by Bonnie and Clyde, Jason (not the reporter) and Lucia could lead the upcoming story. If this is true, Lucia will become the first playable female character in Rockstar history. We all know how the real Bonnie and Clyde ended, so fingers crossed they aren't too true to form.
Other characters
A year before the subtle announcement from Rockstar Games, voice actor Dave Jackson posted the following on his Facebook page:
This could mean literally anything and the post might have landed him in hot water with Rockstar Games. Captain McClane sounds pretty cool though, so we hope he ends up in GTA 6, regardless of what happens. Sorry, Dave!
There's also talk of a character called ‘Tamara’, but we’ll get to that in just a moment.
What about the location?
It has been rumoured that GTA 6 will take place in Vice City (Rockstar’s Miami, Florida), and a total of eleven other cities, towns, and resorts have all been leaked. These include Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Redhill, LO, Sundown, Copperhead, Yorktown, Lake Leonida, Ekanfinika, Hamlet, and Domed Hills.
Other than that, nothing else has been revealed about the world of GTA 6. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
GTA 6 events
In a Tweet, content creator and gamer Dylan (@_Dyllie_) said that there are “multiple confirmed miscellaneous world events in GTA 6”. More than 500, to be specific. If the events listed in his Tweet do end up in the game, we can expect hours (or let’s be real, months) of endless fun.
A potential name
Recently, the name ‘Fireball’ has surfaced once again. If you don’t know what we’re talking about, Fireball could be the new project codename for GTA 6.
In 2022, voice actress NaTonia Monét added the character name ‘Tamara’ to her résumé under ‘Fireball Video Game’ from Rockstar Games. This was removed just a day later and hasn't been added back.
In an exciting, recent update, 'Fireball' appeared on actor Reggie Talley’s IMDB, but has now been replaced with 'Grand Theft Auto VI'. We've also been treated to his character name – RB Shaw. A (hopefully) solid confirmation of both a character and voice actor.
Ready to play your way?
As you know, Rockstar Games is known for their delaying tactics. So, while it seems as though GTA 6 is well underway, we can expect to wait until at least mid-2024 for an official release. In the meantime, we can hope for some action-packed trailers. But until then we’ll just have to sit back, relax, and enjoy the existing games in the franchise.
